Welcome to Back Bay Mission! We are a beloved ministry of the United Church of Christ that has served the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 1922.
Over the course of those nearly 90 years of service, the scope and particulars of our programs have changed and evolved as have the specific needs of our community. Yet the core of Back Bay Mission’s character and purpose has remained steadfast. As our mission statement says, the Mission “serves…by faithful witness for social justice and compassionate service to the poor and marginalized.” That important combination of advocacy for justice alongside our direct services for those who experience injustice daily makes us a unique place….and a challenging one!
As you explore our web site, I hope you will see in us an organization that is dynamic, bold, and faithful. Whether faced with the scourge of racism in the 1960s or the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Back Bay Mission has never been one to run from a challenge. It has been a place of great courage and vision, stepping out in faith to meet head-on the challenges of difficult times and suffering people. In all of this we have been strengthened and empowered by the gifts and support of many, here on the Gulf Coast and nationwide.
